Rock and Roll aficionados are familiar with ‘the Muscle Shoals sound’ and now a wider audience can get an education about the little town in Alabama named Muscle Shoals that hosted many of the greatest rock bands in history in two studios, the FAME studio and the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio founded by the renowned rhythm section known as The Swampers. Bands that passed through those studios’ doors included included The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Paul Simon, Glenn Frey, Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Willie Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart and many more.
Now an album called Muscle Shoals…Small Town, Big Sound celebrates the Muscle Shoals legacy with artists covering some of the greatest tunes recorded in Muscle Shoals, including Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt covering the tune the Stones recorded there in 1969. Check out the new version of Brown Sugar above and the trailer for the new album (which comes out 9/28) below.
