Yesterday’s small plane crash in Melville was captured on video as Long Islanders stood helplessly by, in what was a sight that most likely none of them will ever forget.

Long Islanders on the ground in Melville couldn’t help but look up as the squadron of  the GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team flew above them when suddenly one of the planes fell from the sky and spiraled out of control to the earth. Pilot Ken Johansen, 52, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was headed to Maryland with the team when his World War II-era plane crashed. Johansen, a professional airline pilot and a former U.S. Navy aviator was killed in the crash.

Fortunately residents nearby were spared harm when the plane hit Northcote Drive in a wooded area a few hundred feet from a row of homes.
