Last night at the Garden Billy Joel made his feelings known about the alt-right / white supremacy movement without saying a word. He walked out on stage for his encore wearing a large Star of David on the front of his jacket and another on the back as surprise guest Patty Smyth joined him to perform her Scandal hit ‘Goodbye to You’ while photos of controversial former White House figures like Steve Bannon and Anthony Scaramucci were projected on a screen behind them.
Billy told Rolling Stone magazine earlier this year that he doesn’t like to get political on stage, he tries to “stay out of politics. … I try not to get up on a soapbox and tell people how to think.” He said, “I’ve been to shows where people start haranguing the audience about what’s going on politically and I’m thinking, ‘You know, this isn’t why I came here.”
Perhaps it was Billy’s Jewish heritage that prompted him to speak out, or just a belief that Christian or Jew, black or white we all need to stand up to the forces of hate. Although Billy’s parents were both Jews, Billy wasn’t raised Jewish. In fact at the age of 11 Billy’s mom took him to a Protestant church to get baptized. These days Billy identifies as an atheist.
Billy’s ex-wife Christie Brinkley and his daughter Alexa were at last night’s show and they posted the following photos on Instagram in support of the Piano Man.
And on the day of the Solar Eclipse a yellow star appeared on the jacket of another kind of star with a clinched fist that seemed to be gripping painful, no excruciating, memories of loved ones who wore that star to their death. May that star also remind you today of the gold stars pinned to the jackets of soldiers for their bravery and valor for fighting an evil so hideous even the gold stars in the sky were afraid to shine. Thank you Billy for reminding people what was …so it may never ever again be. My darling @alexarayjoel another reason to be proud of your Pop.
